Medicare

The basics about Medicare

It is very important that you know and understand....

  • Your out-of-pocket expenses after Medicare pays their portion

  • How to be protected from unexpected medical expenses

Medicare is a health insurance program for:

  • people age 65 or older,

  • people under age 65 with certain disabilities, and

  • people of all ages with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant)

Medicare has 4  parts:

Part A-Hospital Insurance. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A because it is typically paid for with the payroll taxes that you have paid while working. It pays for inpatient hospital care, including critical access hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care. It does not cover custodial or long term care. You typically will pay a deductible before your Part A insurance will begin to pay and coinsurance.

Part B-Medical Insurance.  Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.  It covers doctors services in and and out patient care, some physical and occupational therapy, durable medical equipment and home health care if medically necessary. You will pay a deductible and co-insurance before Part B insurance will begin to pay. There are not maximum out of pocket limits.

Part C-Medicare Advantage.  It is another way to get your Medicare coverage. They include all benefits  and services  covered by Part A and Part B and usually covers Medicare prescription drugs.  Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called "Part C" or "MA Plans,"are offered by Medicare-approved  private insurance companies that must follow rules set by Medicare.

Part D-Prescription Drug Coverage. It is prescription drug insurance that is provided by private insurance companies. Most people will pay a monthly premium for the drug coverage.  It may help reduce prescription drug costs.  If you choose to not enroll in prescription drug coverage you may pay a penalty if you choose to join later.
